Report of Food Science Educational Field Trip

SIMPLE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
CAP KUDA COFFEE FACTORY

Our school SSMP had organize an educational trip to Cap Kuda Coffee Factory & Simply Chocolate Factory. It is indeed a fun way of learning and applied what we had learned from the school to the outside world. In the Food world, it is vital that the students are able to applied the knowledge they acquire to reality of food production. Thus field trips such as these are an eye opener and as a 1st exposure to the student in real life.

The first stop is the coffee factory. Coffee is also one of the most outstanding industry as millions and millions of consumer are taking it daily. In the factory, we are expose to the type of coffee and how it is manufactured. Golden rules in coffee production are also given to us verbally. We are also to view different massive, sophisticated devices used in the production. Hence, this expose us more into the food world.

The second stop is the chocolate factory. Chocolate as we know is a very tantalizing delicacy. It is also one of the most attractive candy in the pastry world. Thus, visiting to such factory enable we to learn more about the food. For instance, we are able to observe personally how chocolate is manufactured and it’s process. Beside we are exposing to the variety of chocolate in Sabah. Lastly, really lucky, we are able to get the fresh test of little piece of different chocolate produce by the factory.

Lastly, this trip is really meaningful as it can give us memories by binding bonds between our school mates but also increase our exposure to the food world.

Students Exchange Programme: Indonesia-Malaysia

Hi all! Finally i'm updating the blog with another interesting event that happened in SSMP! We had mushroom farm trips, we had UKM UPM visits, even our Family Day was a big success, what else can we do?

Oh
SURE WE HAVE MORE IN STORE!!! From 8th to 17th of August 2009, SSMP welcomed 4 Health Nutrition undergraduates from Universiti Brawijaya, Indonesia. SSMP had collaborated with SPU (Sekolah Perubatan) for the whole event.
Well, being an exchange student means you'll still have to STUDY. That is why our 4 exchange students Tysa, Amel, Karina and Rany had attended some of the lectures. I believe our 1st year, 2nd year and also 3rd year friends had spotted them in class =)

Of course, it'll be too boring to be only studying, what's more, exchange students are supposed to experience everything new in a new place -- the food, the culture, and also not forgetting to enjoy the beautiful scenary of the surroundings.

Basically, we brought them to Pasar Tamu Jalan Gaya where they experience the lively community of Kota Kinabalu

Also brought them to the beautiful islands of TAR National Park for the sunshine, the beach and also the hotties playing in the water

We held a welcoming ceremony for all the delegates from Indonesia, including the medical exchange students

We celebrated the yearly independence spirit together

We had a walkthrough of the outside and inside of SSMP

We explored all the known and unknown beauty of Universiti Malaysia Sabah with laughter and lots of camwhore

We introduced local delicacies to the pretty ladies, although almost all the food being served are more or less similar to their hometown's

Not forgetting to bring them around different famous restaurants around Kota Kinabalu town

We brought them into the the land with different people and different cultures

We viewed the Sacred Mountain in awe, admiring the beauty of everything around us

And we gave our hearts out to Mother Nature

It was a wonderful experience for the PMSSMP members that shared memorable moments with the Indonesian delegates, and after browsing through all the photos above, I think everybody will be able to see the strong bond being formed between us and them.

SSMP Family Day 2009

UMS ODEC: 1st of August 2009, SSMP had held a family day at UMS ODEC for the new intake students. This family day is held in order to help the new intakes student to get to know their seniors, which is also a good chance for them to get the seniors contact number to bug them for notes during their studies later on.

The participants arrived at around 1.30pm to find themselves queuing up at the registration counter to be separated into different groups.

**Participants patiently queueing up for registeration**

**Thats a big group of students!**

After registration, the family day was officially opened by Dr. Yasmin Ooi. The event then proceeded with the group name and cheers creation time where the participants are required to do the cheers in front of our beloved lecturers to be rated upon. After that, it was a game of ice breaking session where everyone is required to further mix around to form groups required by the committee according to the colour of their name tags.

**Ice Breaking Games**

With the ice breaking session over, the family day then continued with amazing race where groups are required to go to assigned checkpoints and to compete against each other.

**some game of scissors paper stone (Look at Shian's posture)**

**Blindfolded 3-legged walk with extra challenges**

**The tortourous hand-walking course**

**Attempting the stunt of blowing the rubber band out from a mountain of flour**

**Getting soaked in sea water while trying to wet the sponge**

After the amazing race ended, the participants went on to take their food which were prepared by the committee for tea time. The day proceeded with a game of tug-o-war during the evening as the sun sets (Due to horrible picture quality, the picture is not added). The night is then followed by a nice campfire, dances and barbeque dinner for everyone to enjoy.

**Campfire - Before**

**Lighting the campfire (anticipated)**

**Debbie and the remains of the campfire**

The evening ended with the prize giving ceremony by Datin Rugayah. Although the day had some problems and some injuries, our interviewees (the participants of course) admit that the family day was fun and they had enjoyed their time. We hope to see that our future family day will be even more improved.

Ahhh... and last but not least, ALL CHEERS to the committee that made this event possible! =)
